History

With justification the Sagres Restaurant can be described as the "founding father" of the Portuguese Quarter in the city of Hamburg.

Founded in 1971 with the name "Benefica", it was the one and only Portuguese (fish-)restaurant for miles around. The incomparable ambience together with the rich flavours of southern delicacies held a proper magnetic attraction for guests and fellow competitors.

The foundation stone for the culinary and cultural development of an entire part of town was laid.

The name "SAGRES" not only is an homage to the town and most southern district of Portugal, but above all it is a reference to the former Portuguese training sailing ship of the same name.

In the beginning of the 1980s, when the Da Guia family took over the restaurant, it came to happen, that the aforementioned former training sailing ship "Sagres" was brought to a long-lasting anchorage in the city of Hamburg: After a capricious history she lies as the previous and today`s "Rickmer Rickmers" directly opposite to the Sagres Restaurant at "Fiete-Schmidt-Anleger" (Landungsbrücken).

Of course this unique constellation made it a matter of honour to name the restaurant after the SAGRES, the sailing ship of outstanding merit.

Since then more than two decades went by, and the Da Guia family ranks thanks to her rich experience and her proverbial awareness of quality as one of the most rich in tradition cuisiniers of Hamburg. Convince yourself - tradition is a noble and pleasant obligation. And that is why it tastes nice!
